Listen to KUCB radio interview: Visiting artist discusses the art of stained glass and how it’s healing

Marissa Baker was born on a small island in rural Alaska. She grew up playing house in the temperate rain forests that acted as her backyard, and spending time on the shore or cruising the inside passage aboard her fathers fishing vessel. Many of her designs draw from the scenery and experiences of her childhood.

Marissa gravitated towards art from a young age, but never felt particularly drawn to a specific medium. That is until first deciding to attempt the craft of stained glass in 2019. Unlike most people who recognize the art from churches and religious context, she grew up surrounded by the medium in her childhood homes. Her grandpa Chuck's work was well known by the 90s. Charles Larson's 3D hummingbird design was published in partnership with Spectrum Glass in 1993, and has been recreated by hundred of artists since.

10 years later, in September of 2002, her grandfather passed away from melanoma when Marissa was only 3 years old. She never got the chance to learn from her grandfather, but the art and legacy he left behind helped her to find her own way to the craft 17 years later.

Since first investing in the tools and teaching herself the craft (much through trial and error) Marissa has amassed a significant yet modest customer base and built a successful small business making and selling her handcrafted original designs.
